The Ames Alano Society was the brainchild of a handful of recovering alcoholics who dreams of a clubhouse where AA, Al-Anon, and Alateen could hold meetings, store materials, and host events.
Alano is Not AA!
Many new people are confused on this and if it’s not AA why does it matter? Well, the clubhouse may not be AA, but it is open for AA. If you attend meetings at McCormick then you are part of The Alano Society. This is how we can give back
As we know from the AA traditions it was not advisable for any AA group to own property, so in 1978, the group of people formed the non-profit corporation separate from groups for which they support.
The Alano Society today is made up of 15 board members and have mixed membership, but not more than 1/3 can be non-AA members.
Alano’s main concert is to provide a safe, clean, comfortable place that recovering people can gather. Where they can meet on-on-one or with those asking for help.
